Keeping your curtains/blinds/shades open allows for the air circulating throughout the room to hit your windows warming them some. This will reduce the majority of your condensation on your windows.
Another factor that causes condensation on your windows is humidity, the moisture in your home.
To help eliminate some extra humidity in your home that creates more condensation:
- Use the bathroom exhaust fan every time you shower. Showering creates tons of steam and humidity. Using your fan will eliminate a lot of moisture and also bring more fresh air in which will aid in lowering the humidity in your home. If you do not have a fan in your bathroom, crack the window a little while taking a shower.
- Use your fan while cooking with your stove, if you do not have a fan you can crack the windows a little bit.
- Use a Hygrometer. (measures how much humidity is actually in your home)
- Make sure that your clothing dryer vents outdoors.
The colder it is outside, the less humidity you will want in your home to fight condensation. But too little humidity is also bad. If the humidity is too low, it can cause your wood floors and chairs, bloody noses and dry skin. Most homes in the winter cannot handle humidity levels over 50%.
You can purchase many useful tools that measure humidity and even elminate humidity in your home. The most helpful is the Hygrometer, here are a few you can get from Amazon cheap.
If you have to mop up your condensation or clean it up in anyway, this is too much and could lead to mold in your home. This MAY also mean problems inside your walls or in your attic. If you just have a slight layer of condensation on the bottoms of your windows, no worries.
Balancing out the humidity in your home will help prevent costly problems that can come with condensation.
